MacPorts The MacPorts Project is an open-source community initiative to design an easy-to-use system for compiling, installing, and upgrading either command-line, X11 or Aqua based open-source software on the Mac OS X operating system. 
Ubuntu Linux Ubuntu is a fast, secure and easy-to-use operating system used by millions of people around the world. This is a great OS for "newbies" to Linux and FOSS. 
Cygwin  One way to do FOSS on Windows. Provides a reasonably complete shell environment with support for most command-line utilities and many X11 applications.

VirtualBox VirtualBox is a powerful x86 and AMD64/Intel64 virtualization product for enterprise as well as home use. You might find this useful for running Ubuntu in a virtual machine on your Windows or Mac system without having to reboot.
